A file that is merely “smaller” may still fail. The portal can also require a particular format, pixel range, aspect ratio or filename, so treat compression as one part of a short preparation checklist.
Check the form requirements before compressing

Use a reliable 50KB workflow
Upload the original file rather than a screenshot or a copy repeatedly saved by a messaging app. Set the target to 50KB or slightly below it, keep proportional resizing enabled, and let the browser create the result. Aiming for roughly 47–49KB gives a little tolerance for portals that calculate size differently.
Preview the image at normal viewing size. Check faces, text, seals and fine edges rather than judging only the thumbnail. If those details look soft, return to the original and try a better source file instead of compressing the already compressed download again.

- Download and inspect the final file, not just the preview.
- Retain the original until the form is accepted.
Why the uploaded image can still be rejected

Preserve clarity at a small file size
The best 50KB result balances dimensions and compression. Keeping a huge pixel canvas forces the encoder to discard more visual detail; reducing unnecessary pixels first often produces a cleaner-looking image. This matters especially when the portal displays only a small profile photo.
